Franken For Senate - A Lesson to Learn

I think conservatives across the country have something to learn from the Senate race shaping up in Minnesota.  Mr. Franken has thrown his hat in the ring, and has apparently closed the gap a bit since his initial announcement.  Now, hold your mouse button, before all you conservatives here on Townhall decide to click to a new page or lynch me.  I am not advocating for Mr. Franken.  I've read his position statements on his website, and I do not agree with a single thing he has to say.  I also do not find his resume to be up to snuff.  Personally, I do not think a rather mediocre comedian, with several rather mediocre movies and a failed radio station that was supposed to be the bane of Conservative Talk Radio's existence is the stuff of Senatorial aspirations.  But I have to take my hat off to the man.  Let me tell you why.

I read the conservative blogs, listen to the news on the radio, read quite a few articles from both conservative and liberal sources.  All day I see headlines from various news magazines.  And there is a consistent sense of doom and gloom from both sides of the political spectrum.  Worse, there is an overwhelming sense of whining all around.  There are a few shining lights.  Newt Gingrich in his Winning the Future column is consistently upbeat.  Not only that, but he is working with others to offer solutions to the difficulties our country is facing.  Thomas Sowell, even when decrying some of the more absurd activities of government is generally upbeat in his writing.  Doug Giles is usually witty and upbeat, although not necessarily politically oriented.  And there are others.  But mostly, we hear a lot of whining, from the Democrats about how awful the Republicans have been for the past six years.  From the Republicans about how horrible the Democrats are right now.  I hear this grumbling from those around me.  People complaining about the lack of honesty, leadership, and direction from our politicians.  And yet all any of them do is sit and grumble, whine and complain.

I truly hope the good people of Minnesota do not put Mr. Franken in the Senate.  I believe that the three ring circus we call Washington, DC has enough clowns these days.  It could use a few more ring masters.  But I have to admire Mr. Franken.  He sees a situation with his government that he doesn't like.  He sees people in charge of his government that he feels are leading up in the wrong direction.  And, being as this is America, with a government of the people, he chose to put his money where his mouth is and try to do something about the things he doesn't like.  As I said before, I don't agree with him.  Being as this is America, that is my right.  But I do admire anyone who is willing to put themselves on the line for their beliefs.  More Americans need to do so.

So, my fellow conservatives, who among you is ready to take that challenge?  I know, the deck is stacked.  I know it takes money to run a campaign.  I know the press will look into every dark corner, and find a few that probably don't exist.  I know I'm unelectable to any kind of major office.  I'm twice divorced, mother of five, broke most of the time, a Bible thumping Christian, and the list goes on.  Yet, if I could find the financing, I'd still be willing to do it, just because I'm pretty sure I could still do a better job than most of the folks we've got running the asylum now.  Are you sick and tired of the way politics in this country works?  Are you tired of the government ignoring the folks they are supposed to serve?  Are you ready for a change?  Well, the time has come.  Start looking into the background of all those running for office in your next elections.  If you don't like any of the options, there's still time to get in the race.  If we don't take responsibility for the running of our country, how do we expect to hold anyone else accountable for their actions?

So, Mr. Franken, though I can't say that I wish you well in your race, my hat is off to you for being man enough to stand by your convictions.  I hope some conservatives will heed the call as well.

The Answer

I am weary of war, both here at home in our politics, and abroad where the troops' lives are on the line.  As most sane people do, I want peace.  I want an end to bloodshed, I want to be done with news of deaths, bombs, and threats.  If I truly thought pulling out of Iraq would accomplish that goal, I would join the ranks of those calling for just that.  But history tells us that the panacea those folks are preaching is at best wishful thinking, and at worst willful murder.  The USA will not be allowed to back down.  Should we begin a retreat, the forces driving the evil coming out of the Middle East will sweep in behind us, slaughtering millions, invading their neighbors, attacking Europe, and eventually bringing the war once again to US shores.  Every time the United States has backed down from its promises it has resulted in death and destruction to the innocents we turned away from.  Eventually it leads right back to where we are now, but with a much higher cost.

 So, this message is for my fellow Christians around the world.  I am asking you to join me in prayer.  The Lord tells us that through Him all things are possible, and that prayer is our strongest weapon. 

 Lord, we’re in a mess, and we have for too long not turned to you for guidance in the larger affairs of the world.  Today, we ask that you will be the sword and shield for the men and women fighting to save your children from the darkness in the Middle East, Africa and around the world.  Please keep them safe, and stand with them, that they may be strong and invincible.  We ask that you give them peace and hope in the midst of the storms they face each day that others may live in the freedom you gave us at our creation.

 We ask that you will move in the hearts and minds of our leaders around the world.  Give them the wisdom to make the right choices, to stand strong and true for what is just and right, and to lead us to victory in the face of criticism.  We know that you are over governments, and that you can and will use this current crisis to your good.  We know too that how hard it will be directly relates to how willing we are to follow you.  Please Lord give us the will and the stamina to do what is right.

 We ask that those who are wavering, calling for reconciliation, those who wish to make accommodation with evil will be reminded of you words to the Corinthians:

 “Don't become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That's not partnership (in other translations this is peace); that's war. Is light best friends with dark? Does Christ go strolling with the Devil? Do trust and mistrust hold hands?” 2 Corinthians 6:14

 Let their fear of failure, their quest for power and personal glory be laid to rest, and let them come together to stand strong and faithful in the face of evil.

 Lastly Lord, we know that our troops are strong, that you are with them, and that they can crush the enemies we face.  But we also know that is not enough to bring a lasting peace.  We know your Son is the Prince of Peace, and we know that only through Him shall peace come.  So Lord, we ask that you move among the followers of Islam.  We ask that you speak to the hearts of their leaders, and call them out of evil as you did Saul.  And if they still harden their heart against you, we ask that you still use them to the good, as you did with Pharaoh in Egypt.  We ask that you show us the path to be your shining light in the darkness of the Middle East and Africa.  Give us the means, and the direction to bring your peace and love to those who have been held in bondage and ignorance, either never having heard of you or having been taught to turn their face from you, and their hand against those who follow you.  It is easy for us to hate these people, it is easy for us to desire to use the force of arms you have graced us with to eliminate these people from the earth.  But your scripture also tells us:

 "You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.' I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves.”  Matthew 5:43

 Lord, give us the grace to love our enemies, and the courage to heed your call.  We place ourselves at your service, and say now, in this time, in this place, send me.  We thank you for the many blessings you have graced our lives with, for the mercy you have shown us as we have tried to go our own way, and for the sure knowledge that you are with us, and are mighty to save us from all things.  

 Amen

 God is the answer folks, to each and every thing in our lives.  It is time we started to use the strongest weapon He gave us.  Pray this prayer, and be prepared to be obedient when he calls you.  There are more than 2 billion Christians in the world today.  He tells us that prayer by one of us is heard and acted upon, but that when we pray together as a body, all things are possible.  So please pass this on, pray it unceasingly, send it to your prayer groups, and let’s start making a joyful noise, in the sure knowledge that God  will bring his peace if we but ask and are faithful.

 For those of you who read both of my blogs, I apologize ahead of time for the duplication, but this message is for everyone, and needs to be spread as far as possible.

 May His blessings be upon you and His peace fill you wherever you may be.

Optimism - An American Tradition

Did you know that in the early 1900s a bunch of American's got together and formed the Optimist club?  I cannot imagine another country where this might have happened, and it is an amazing story to see the impact it has had in nearly a century of spreading it's message both here and abroad.  You can check it out here.

Alright, so now you are wondering where I'm going with this.  It has struck me these past few months, and especially the past few weeks, that the people of this country need to be reminded of their roots from time to time.  I have been reading the news, and checking out the comments by those inclined to discuss the news on the internet, and I have noticed a steadily worsening sense of desolation.  And I must ask myself why.  Do you not remember the story of the founding of this country?  You know, the one where a group of underarmed, underfunded, and undertrained men took on the greatest military force of the time, and won.  This wasn't done because someone woke up one morning and said "Well, we don't like the way the King is treating us, but there's nothing we can do about it."  It happened because a courageous few saw injustice all around them, threatening the freedoms they held dear, and stepped up to the plate.  Through sheer faith, optimism, and stubborness, they succeeded in forming a Union, and throwing off the rule of their oppressors.  Wow.

On from there, Lewis & Clark began explorations to the west.  They endured hardship, hostile treatment from the natives, illness, and many other things, but through will, determination and faith, made it to their goal and brought back a wealth of information, as well as new friendships established with the Indians.   During this time, our President also recognized the danger of the Islamic terrorists then known as the Barbary Pirates, and took the fight to them in Tripoli, and won.

During the war of 1812, Fort McHenry stood against all odds under the bombardment from the British fleet.  The fact that the flag still flew all night long, under pounding from a naval force that had reduced every other opponent to nothing, was enough to inspire the words of our National Anthem, which still brings a lump to my throat. 

During the 1830s we faced the Mexicans, as they tried to seize the lawful property of citizens.  Our men held at the Alamo for days, holding up Santa Ana's troops for the thirteen days that Sam Houston needed to get into position for the Battle of San Jacinto, where Santa Ana was captured, and his troops scattered. 

Later, we faced the most devastating event that can happen to any country when the Civil War began.  Brothers and friends fought each other for four long and bloody years.  Each side fighting valiantly for what they believed was right, and coming close to tearing apart the Union that had formed nearly 100 years before.  Even with the battle raging for the very fabric of our society, the Army was still securing the borders against outside invaders, two new states were added, and the Westward Expansion continued unabated.  When the war was done, though there were many bumps, some with reprecussions still felt today, the United States of America still stood unbowed.

After the Civil War, the Westward Expansion continued, bringing about the shape of the country we now hold dear today.  Advances were made in industry with electricity, telephones, the trans-continental railroad, Seward's Folly in the unappreciated aquisition of Alaska, and any number of other advances that are the foundation of the advanced society and economy we now live in.

In the late 1890s, the Maine was blown up.  Combined with the severe maltreatment of the Cubans by the Spanish, this event triggered the Spanish American War, in which our volunteer military beat the Spanish military in Cuba, and showed the world that America was not to be attacked.

During the time between the Spanish American war, and World War I, our Army secured our Southern border against the raids of Poncho Villa and his men.  They chased them into Mexico, and captured the enemies, and stopped the raids of our border towns.

During the late teens, we were once again called upon to step onto the world stage when the war in Europe threatened to envelope and enslave the entire world.  After trying to stay out of it, trying to stay neutral, and still supply the forces we saw as in the right, it was finally incumbent upon us to step up once again, and fight for freedom.  We entered the war, and bolstered the flagging European Armies, giving the Allies the opportunity for a final victory over Germany.

In World War II, we once again waited, trying to stay neutral, and supply our allies in their battle against the evil of Hitler and his Nazi regime.  Once again, we were impelled to join the battle when we were attacked by Japan, and Germany declared war on the United States, assuming that we would fight the Japanese, and stop being able to supply Europe.  Germany and Japan soon learned their mistake.  The United States Armed Forces, and the civilian production workers stepped up to the plate, and fought a two front war.  In the midst of the war, the United States won the race to produce nuclear weapons.  Our President, on seeing that the war would continue indefinitely, costing millions more lives than had already been spent, inheriting a war from a three term President who died in office, made one of the most courageous decisions in history.  President Truman chose the possibility of vilification by the rest of the world, and sent the bombers to Japan that dropped the first and only nuclear bombs ever used in war.  While there were hundreds of thousands of lives lost in these attacks, history records that the cease fire it brought saved millions more of both military and civilian personnel on both sides of the conflict.

In the years since World War II, there have been tremendous advances in technology, staggering increases in the standard of living, even among the country's most poor.  There have been huge social advances with the advent of Martin Luther King, and his ideal of a color blind society, and equality for all Americans.  The largest and most pernicious Communist regime was defeated by the sheer strength of our economy, and the will of our President.  The Islamic terrorists that have been waging war against us on and off since the time we became a country have been kept in check until recently.  Our enemies from World War II have become allies, adopted democracy, and prospered.

None of these things were accomplished by men and women who were faint of heart, who spent their time wringing their hands over adversity, who contemplated failure as an option.  The question was never can we do it, but how do we do it.  And so it must be now.  Those of you out there reading this, why have we elected leaders that do not share in the great optimism, the great hope, and the great faith that is the very bedrock of this incredible nation that has weathered so much and grown stronger because of it?  Those in government, why would you wring your hands, cry defeat, say we cannot win in Iraq, or anywhere else?  The question has never been can we, but how.  All of us must quit bickering, quit posturing, quit moaning, and remember who we are. 

I have been hearing a movie trailer lately, that I think makes the point here.  I don't like Billy Bob Thornton all that much, and I hate dramas.  If it doesn't have explosions, fight scenes, or ridiculous scenes to make me roll on the floor laughing, I probably won't enjoy it.  But one line keeps pulling me, and I may have to go see this one anyway.  "Somewhere along the line, we stopped believing that we could do anything," from the Astronaut Farmer.  I don't think we've stopped believing, just forgotten.  It's time we remembered.  We are Americans, and we can do anything.

Letter to the Citizens of the USA - Part II

    Hi folks, I hope you all had a great Valentine's Day, and enjoy the long weekend many of you will have this weekend.  So, did you finish your homework?  I know I did last night, and was surprised that it took less than an hour to read The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and all the amendments.  It was fairly boring, but, as my husband pointed out, it's not high adventure, but an instruction manual on how to run a country.

This is supposed to be an interactive process, so I hope to hear from all of you on what you learned as you read these documents that founded our country, and made it the incredible nation it is today.  I realized as I was settling down to read, that sadly I have not read any of these documents in full since the 8th grade.  I find that a little disturbing looking back, as I had American History and Government in high school, and do not remember once touching on the most important documents in our history.

I had several observations that hit me as I read through the Constitution most especially, but those will be for tomorrow's column.  Tonight, I want to focus on the Declaration of Independence.

This passage in praticular is what we as citizens of this awesome Republic should be focusing on:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

First, the government does NOT give you your rights.  Your Creator gives you your rights, and governments are instituted by men to SECURE these rights, not confer them.  Governments derive their powers from the people they govern, not the other way around.  The next little bit, about instituting a new government and organizing its powers refers more to what the Founders did, and how very carefully they constructed our Constitution so as not to leave us open to the kinds of abuses they were fighting against.  They did a great job, but it is time to bring our government back to its founding principles.  The last line brings us to the point of this column.  When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces designs to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is the right, it is the DUTY, to throw off such Government, and provide new Guards for their future security.

Please do not read this wrong.  I am NOT advocating a violent overthrow of our government.  I am NOT advocating rebellion.  What I am saying is that as citizens of this country, it is incumbent upon us, it is our DUTY, to throw off the aspects of our government that are steadily trying to reduce us to servitude, and provide new guards for our future security.  Our Founding Fathers did a pretty excellent job in leaving us the ability to do so without resorting to an armed revolution.  They ensured our right to vote, and they ensured our right to petition our government for redress when it gets out of line.  The reason that there are so many abuses of power in Washington, and so much corruption and waste is not because the system is broken.  It is because we as citizens have thrown up our hands and said "Well that's the way it is," "You can't fight City Hall," "You can't change the way Washington runs," "I'm just one person, what can I do about it," and so forth.  For far too long, we have forgotten to remind our representatives that they work for us.  Worse, we have slowly allowed the government to assume responsibilities that were once reserved for the people, and have thus allowed them to remove our rights.  It is time for that to change.

So, here is your next bit of homework, keeping in mind what you learned from your reading assignment, and I really do hope to hear from some of you on what you discovered.  Over the next day, it is time for you to do some soul searching.  Figure out what you stand for, what you believe the roll of government should be, and what issues are important to you.  I do not care, personally, what those issues are.  I am not advocating in this column any particular view point (although I probably will in later columns).  I am writing on a conservative site at the moment, but this message is not for conservatives.  It is not for liberals, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, or any other political group.  This message is for all Americans.  I am an American, and I want my country to remain strong, prosperous, and a beacon of hope around the world.  In order for that to happen, her citizens are required to be responsible for their governance, and to hold their representatives responsible.  But in order for that to happen, each individual must know what they believe, what they stand for, and be willing to stand for those beliefs.  So take a little time, I'll be back with you tomorrow, figure out what your priorities are when it comes to sound government, and please, if you have a minute let me know.  The nation can't move forward without healthy debate, and sound goals and ideas.  That debate and those ideas must start with us the people, in order for our government to implement them.

Letter to the Citizens of the USA - Part I

For years now we have been hearing about a quagmire, or Vietnam Deja Vu, or how we are Stuck in Iraq.  At the same time the politicians running our country have provided endless fodder for our entertainment on the nightly news, talk shows, and unfortunately at serious functions of State, both nationally and internationally.  I have watched, and waited, and prayed, that the ladies and gentlemen in our houses of Congress would step up and show themselves to be the leaders and servants they purported to be in order to get elected.  And with few exceptions, they have fallen down on the job.

For years we were subjected to the majority party cowering in fear and indecision lest they be called bigots, racists, rednecks, fanatics, or God forbid, Fundamentalist Christians.  While at the same time, the minority party spent their time yelling at the top of their lungs about how bad the majority was.  Facts didn't enter into the matter in either case, decorum and sound judgement didn't enter into it either.  Now, we are subjected to a pouty lot in the minority, and crowing from the majority, with little real action, and most of that bad if you go by what the experts on the various matters say.

And already, we have a feeding frenzy for the next election.  Hats on both sides being thrown into the ring at a terrific rate, even though the election is more than a year and a half away.  For the next year and a half, we will be subjected to a free for all with each candidate calling all the others names, dragging eachother through the dirt, grandstanding for the cameras, and strutting for a populous, as though they were auditioning for American Idol.  They will seek to distract and entertain us with the nastiest style Jerry Springer tactics, and I fear, that unless we are vigilant, they will succeed.  They will spend a year and a half yammering away at us with grandious words, and little action, in the hopes that on election day the votes will go to the one who yelled the loudest and longest.  It is time we said enough.

This country was born in blood, and preserved in blood through each generation, that her citizens might have the freedom to live their lives, and choose the people that would represent them in the government.  With that freedom, that more than a million men and women have died for, and more than another million were wounded for, there comes a responsibility to her citizens.  We can no longer afford the comfortable complacence we have wallowed in these last few decades when all wars have been fought far away, and the government has been a far away reality TV show.  It is incumbent on us as a population, as Americans, as free people, to use those freedoms to take our government out of the hands of the small men and women, with convoluted minds, and clouded vision who currently run it.  The halls of Congress, the Senate, and the White House deserve to be walked by men and women who know the sacrifices made to create them and keep them.  The people deserve to be led by men and women whose goal is the protection of our country, and upholding the constitution, not grasping for what little personal power they can take. 

Even an optimistic voter turn out projection for the 2004 election shows only a 60% turnout for eligible voters.  Where are the other 40% of us?  And how many of the 60% of us that voted actually took the time to find out the background, voting record, accomplishments outside politics, principles and goals of the candidates we voted for?  Did you check, or did you just look for the R or D beside their name?  I know there have been times when I have been guilty of the latter.  It is high time that the people of this country, every single citizen who is above the age of 18 and eligible to vote not only get registered and shows up, but knows who they are voting for, and why. 

With that in mind, this is the first of several letters to my fellow countrymen, and tonight you have homework.  When was the last time you read the Constitution of the United States of America?  How about the Declaration of Independence?  The Bill of Rights?  Tonight and tomorrow, I want you to skip the TV shows, the news, or whatever else you do with your free time in the evening, and bone up on the responsibilities of the officials you are electing to office.  Reaquaint yourselves with the job description of members of Congress, the Senate, the President.  The links for these are here

There is a link at the bottom of the Bill of Rights page for the rest of the Amendments, and you should take a moment to read through those as well.  I do not care if you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Green, Yellow or Purple, the foundation of a strong Republic is a well educated population, who understands it's responsibilities, and what it's government is and is NOT allowed to do.  So tonight, take some time to reeducate yourselves so that you will know what to look for in your new hires come next November.  The day after, you might want to check out the Constitutions for your individual states too.  You can find links to most of those here.

Letter to the Government

To All the Various Memebers and Hopeful Members of the Government of the United States of America:

With one election cycle behind us, and another already started, and various pundits on both sides of the political spectrum bleating about the meaning of the shift of 2006, I felt it was time to make my voice heard.  I am a regular American.  I have a family, a job, a faith, and thanks to my father, who was in the Navy for 20 years, a deep appreciation of this country I was born to.  I have closely watched the political news this past few years.  I have done my duty as a citizen of this country and voted in the elections that have come up, and prayed for our politicians and our troops for strength and resolve in the face of dark times.  And I have been disappointed and disgusted by the former, while I have been inspired and awed by the latter.

In trying to find the message that I needed to send to you, I began looking at what had me so disheartened.  I began reading and listening to those around me, those in the news, and those on the net.  And I realized that the pundits on both sides had it wrong.  The November election was not a referendum on the war, it was not a referendum on President Bush's immigration policies, the economy, stem cell research or abortion.  It was not about any single item on the agenda of the Republicans or Democrats in Congress, or the President in the White House.  It was simply about this.  The American People are crying out for leaders, and we are stuck with politicians.  We are calling for servants, and you are trying to be masters.  It is time for all of you, federal, local and state to recall why you have your jobs, and exactly who you work for.

Our Constitution ensures a government of the people, by the people, for the people.  You owe your jobs to the people of this country.  You were hired by the people of this country to protect it from enemies domestic and foreign.  To ease trade between the states.  Locally, you were hired by the people to see to the needs of your communities without undue intrusion into the personal lives of your populace, and without allowing undue influence from Washington.  In short, you all had job interviews, that cost millions of dollars, and in a perfect world would have been hired on the merits of your goals and accomplishments. 

However, in today's troubled times, we are not gifted with a government of the people, who have taken a sabbatical from their real lives to serve their country in public office.  We are saddled with a government filled with politicians whose entire lives have been spent in the game of politics.  The latest election is nothing more or less that an indication that the people of this country are beginning to once again look for servants, and more importantly, leaders whose only goal is to serve their country to the best of their ability, rather than to serve themselves.

So, to those of you who are already in office, consider this your notice.  Either reestablish your credentials and abilities to lead this country by putting forth constructive goals, along with concrete plans for reaching them.  Or find yourselves out of work come next election cycle.

To those of you who are currently contemplating running for office, and those up for reelection, we want to see your resume.  We, as your potential employers are not interested in your personal affairs, we don't care about your teenage misdemeanors.  We want to know what you stand for, not what you think the other guy thinks.  We want to know why you are qualified for the job you are seeking, not why you think the other guy isn't.  We want to know what you will accomplish should we choose to give you the job, and how you intend to accomplish it, not why you think the other guy will fail.

Our country is at war with an implacable enemy.  Our allies are watching and waiting for us to stumble.  Our enemy is waiting for us to falter.  And you have the unmitigated gall, on both sides of the aisle, to sit and point fingers, cast criticisms, and throw tantrums on the world stage.  The people of this country are tired of the antics of children being broadcast across the world, making the government of the most powerful country on the planet appear to be a circus.  America is entitled to adult supervision, and from here on out, we will require it of our leaders at all levels of government.  So please, think hard, listen to your conscience, and learn from your mistakes.  Grow up, and fufill the obligations you lobbied so hard to undertake.

I’ve been pondering what I wanted to write for this first column, with so many things spinning through my head each day about what needs to be said in this time when so many of us are timid and concerned for what others will think of us.  There will be many messages here in the coming weeks, and many thoughts that are sure to be controversial.  That isn’t the intent, I don’t much care for controversy.  I don’t much care for attention, nor crave the approval or validation of others.  But, I have been praying daily for guidance on what I am supposed to be doing here in this place and time, and this is where I have been led.

 
In the weeks ahead, there will be letters to the leaders of the world, the leaders of the churches, the people of the free countries, and those of the oppressed.  But for today, there is another message that occurred to me this week that needs to be voiced.  I was thinking of the news stories of the soldiers half way around the world from the place where I sit and write this note.  The stories of those who have died because they have thrown themselves upon a grenade, have fought on while wounded, have condemned themselves to save their fellow soldiers.  There was another story of a man in Iraq who saw a murderer heading toward a mosque to kill a hundred people.  Knowing it meant death, this man, in front of his children, threw himself into an embrace with the murderer, detonating the bomb before it could cause untold harm.  I hear these stories often, of the young men and women fighting the war against the evil emanating from the Middle East.  These ordinary men and women have chosen, with no extraordinary powers, to throw themselves daily into the breach so that the rest of us may know some peace and safety.  How awe inspiring to think that a simple human being, from a simple sense of duty, a simple sense of justice, can learn to do something so counterintuitive.  How many of you can imagine going against every instinct for survival to selflessly throw your life up as a shield for those around you?

 
There are many here, and around the world who have chosen to criticize from the safety of their homes, the comfort of their cushy jobs, the security of their free countries.  There are many who have grown tired of the constant yammering of war, of evil, of danger, and they have grown complacent in the ease of their lives so far away from the fronts of this war.  There are those who vilify the United States and her allies, even as they enjoy the protection and prosperities their actions bring. 

 
For all of you, I have a message, and I hope you hear me clearly.  The world is not built in shades of gray.  There is good and evil, there is right and wrong.  The men and women of Mohammed, the religion of Islam, that are seeking to subjugate and destroy the rest of the world’s people are quite simply evil and wrong.  The military of the USA, the British, the Canadians, the Australians, the Afghans, the new Iraq, and the other 30 + countries who are currently fighting in the Middle East are the soldiers and the men in those stories.  The leaders of these countries, have bravely and heroically called upon their militaries, who have willingly gone and thrown themselves on the grenade, continued to fire, embraced the murderer that is Islamic Fascism so that their fellows might continue to live in freedom, and by extension others might gain that freedom, and help to continue the fight.  There will always be evil, there will always be men and women who will use their positions of power to either use that evil to maintain that power, or to discourage the rest of us from persevering in the effort to thwart that evil.  By God’s grace though, there will also always be more of us who will be willing to sacrifice our comfort, our silence, and our lives if need be to see that justice and goodness prevails.

 
To the men and women who spend each day standing up for the cause of freedom, for the cause of good and right.  To those who sacrifice so much, whether you are on the battlefields, at home supporting those who fight and die in intelligence, diplomacy, or as the loved ones they are fighting for. To the ones of you walking down the street in your hometown, that throw yourself on the bomb meant for the innocents around you.  I, for one, salute you.  You are in my prayers, and I hope in the prayers of every other Christian on this planet.  Know that despite the outcry, despite the harangues, despite the obstacles your friends and foes alike sometimes throw in your path, your sacrifice is known, and cherished by those of us watching and waiting and praying for the causes you fight so valiantly for.  Thank you, and may God bless you and bring you safely home when the job is done.
